How Much Nether Wart Do You Actually Need?
One ingredient brews three potions, so a single stack of nether wart covers 192 of them. Most Nether trips for more wart are unnecessary.
One ingredient, three potions
The brewing stand has three bottle slots, and a single ingredient is consumed for all three.
So twenty-one potions take seven nether wart. Not twenty-one. The same goes for your effect ingredient, your redstone, your gunpowder — every one of them is one per batch, never one per potion.
Count it per potion and you'll triple every number on your shopping list. That is the entire reason nether wart is the most over-farmed crop in the game: a single stack of 64 covers 192 potions.

Every stage is a separate 20-second brew
This is the other half people underestimate, and it's where the time goes.
Brewing isn't one operation. An extended splash potion is four:

Eighty seconds per batch of three. Ask the tool for twenty potions and it works out to seven batches, 28 operations and 9.3 minutes of real time — and you finish with 21 potions, because it rounds up to a multiple of three.
Those spares are free. The ingredient was consumed for the batch whether you filled the third bottle or not, so round your target up to a multiple of three and take them.
Redstone or glowstone. Never both
This one is a genuine rule of the game rather than a matter of preference.
A potion with an enhanced effect has a shorter duration, and a potion with extended duration cannot have an enhanced effect. Applying the second replaces the first rather than adding to it.
That's why the tool offers the upgrade as one dropdown instead of two tick boxes — an impossible shopping list is worse than no shopping list, so the rule is built into what you're allowed to ask for.
Lingering costs two extra stages, not one
A lingering potion is made from a splash potion, not a drinkable one.
So you pay for the gunpowder stage and the dragon's breath stage — five stages in total for an extended lingering potion, and you need equal numbers of gunpowder and dragon's breath. It's the most expensive form in both time and fuel, which is worth knowing before committing to a big batch.
Blaze powder counts stages, not potions
One blaze powder fuels 20 brewing operations, and every stage counts as one of them.
That distinction is brutal at four stages a batch:
- Extended splash — 20 operations ÷ 4 stages = 5 batches = 15 potions per powder.
- Plain awkward potion — one stage = 60 batches per powder.
A fourfold difference in fuel for the same piece. If your stand keeps running dry halfway through a session, this is the arithmetic behind it, and it's the number that catches people out when they're brewing somewhere far from a blaze farm.
More stands buy time and cost fuel
Fuel sits in each stand's own slot, so parallel brewing is a genuine trade rather than a free win. For those same twenty extended splash potions:

The second stand is free — it nearly halves the time and the fuel bill doesn't move, because seven batches split two ways still fits inside one powder each. From the third onwards you pay a powder per stand.
Note also that a part-used round still costs a full round: seven batches across three stands is three rounds, not 2.33. That's why the time doesn't fall in a straight line.
What the figure still doesn't cover is you walking between stands and restocking. Treat it as a floor, the same way you'd treat the time estimate on a tournament bracket — good for deciding whether something fits in an evening, not for scheduling to the minute.
