Is Nether Travel Actually Faster?
Eight to one sounds decisive until you count the portals. Below a few hundred blocks, walking genuinely wins.
The ratio is fixed, the answer isn't
One block travelled in the Nether moves you eight in Overworld terms. That's built into how the dimensions relate — definitional, not measured.
So a 2,000-block journey becomes 250 blocks underground. Decisive, surely.
Except portals cost time that has nothing to do with distance: building both ends, lighting them, the loading pause on each transition, and the tunnelling needed to reach somewhere safe at the far end. That total is the same whether you're going 200 blocks or 20,000.

Measure it: note your coordinates, travel in a straight line for a fixed time, divide. Sprinting is around 5.6.
Often different - an ice boat road is much faster than walking. Enter the same number if you travel the same way.

Where the lines cross
Distance where the Nether starts winning is the answer that actually decides anything.
At the defaults — sprinting speed, a minute of portal overhead — it's 384 blocks. And you can check it: put 384 into the distance field and time saved reads 0, with both routes taking exactly 69 seconds.
Below that, the surface wins outright. At 200 blocks the Nether costs you 29 seconds.
Set the overhead to zero and break-even collapses to 0 — with no portal cost, the ratio wins at every distance. Which is really a statement about how much of this decision is the portals rather than the maths.
Measure your speed, don't look it up
Walking, sprinting, sprint-jumping, an ice boat, a minecart, a horse and elytra are all very different — and effects, terrain and obstacles change each again.
Note your coordinates, travel in a straight line for a fixed number of seconds, divide. Once per way you actually travel.
That beats any table, because it captures your route and your play rather than an ideal straight line on flat ground.
There are two speed fields because most people move differently in each dimension — an ice boat road in the Nether against elytra or foot on the surface. If yours are the same, enter the same number twice.
Y doesn't scale
Only X and Z are divided by eight. Height maps one to one.
A portal at Y=12 in the Nether wants Y=12 in the Overworld. Expecting height to scale is a reliable way to arrive somewhere unexpected.
The Nether time is a floor
The calculation assumes a straight line, and the Nether rarely offers one. Lava seas, ravines, fortresses and open drops all force detours, and a tunnel that wanders costs more than the arithmetic shows.
Treat it as the best case and add what your route demands.
That's also an argument for digging properly on a route you use often — the straight line stops being hypothetical once it exists.
Repeated routes change everything
This is the biggest thing the tool doesn't model.
These figures are for a single journey, so the entire portal overhead lands on one trip. A permanent link spreads that build cost over every future use, pushing break-even a long way down.
A route you travel daily is worth linking at distances where a one-off trip clearly wouldn't be. The practical version: once the portals exist, re-run it with a much smaller overhead representing just the transition pause.
What the overhead figure should actually contain
People under-enter this, which is why the Nether looks better on paper than it turns out to be.
It isn't just the seconds spent standing in a portal. It's finding a safe spot to build on the far side, mining the obsidian if you didn't bring any, lighting it, the loading pause at each transition, and — most often forgotten — tunnelling from wherever the Nether portal landed you to somewhere you can actually travel from. A portal that opens onto a lava lake or halfway up a cliff costs a great deal more than one that opens into an existing tunnel.
A minute is a reasonable default for a link you're building fresh in explored terrain. Building blind into unexplored Nether can easily be five or ten times that, and at those numbers the break-even distance moves out to thousands of blocks — which is the honest reason a lot of short-hop tunnels never repay the effort that went into them.
One thing to get right while building
Portals link by coordinate proximity, not by the order you built them. Two Overworld portals close together can end up sharing one Nether portal and sending you somewhere you didn't intend.
The fix is to build both ends deliberately at matching coordinates rather than letting the game generate the far side. That's a coordinate problem rather than a timing one — this tool only answers whether the trip is worth making.
