THE 8:1 RATIO IS FIXED BY THE GAME. One block travelled in the Nether moves you eight blocks in Overworld terms, so a 2,000-block journey becomes 250 blocks underground. That ratio is definitional rather than measured, and it is the entire reason Nether travel exists as a strategy. ⚠️ BUT THE RATIO IS NOT THE WHOLE ANSWER, WHICH IS WHY SHORT TRIPS STILL LOSE. Portals cost time: building them, lighting them, the loading pause on each transition, and usually some tunnelling at the far end to reach a safe spot. - Yes, though it is a separate problem from travel time. Portals link by coordinate proximity rather than by the order you build them, so two Overworld portals that are close together can end up sharing a single Nether portal and sending you to the wrong place. The usual fix is to build both ends deliberately at matching coordinates rather than letting the game generate the far side.
