How this is calculated

The count is worked out as rows times plants per row, not as bed area divided by spacing squared. Those two are not the same, and the row method is the honest one: you cannot plant a fraction of a row. Spacing is entered in inches and divided by 12 to bring it into feet. Each direction is then divided by that and rounded DOWN, because a partial gap at the end of a row does not hold a plant. Row spacing is separate from in-row spacing, since many crops want more room between rows than between plants. Setting them equal gives you a square grid. The figures on a seed packet are the spacing at MATURITY, not at planting. A seedling four inches across that wants eighteen inches looks absurdly far apart in April and exactly right in July. This assumes a rectangular bed planted in straight rows. Offsetting alternate rows into a triangular pattern fits roughly 15 percent more into the same space, at the cost of being harder to hoe between.

Common questions

Why not just divide the area by the spacing?
Because you cannot plant a fraction of a row. Area divided by spacing squared gives a number that ignores where the bed actually ends, and it is usually optimistic. Rows times plants per row is what will really go in the ground.
The spacing looks far too wide for my seedlings.
It always does. Packet spacing is the room a plant needs at MATURITY, and a four-inch seedling that wants eighteen inches looks ridiculous in April. Crowding is the most common reason a bed underperforms - plants compete for light, air stops moving between them, and mildew follows.
What does offsetting the rows do?
Planting alternate rows staggered, so each plant sits in the gap between two in the row before, packs roughly 15 percent more into the same bed. The trade is that there is no longer a straight line to hoe or walk down.
Should rows and plants have the same spacing?
Not always. Many crops want more room between rows than between plants in a row - partly for the plant, partly so you can get down the bed to weed and harvest. In a raised bed you reach in from the sides, so row spacing can often be tighter than a packet written for field rows assumes.
Does this work for square foot gardening?
Yes. Set both spacings the same and read the plants-per-square-foot from the packet: a 12 inch spacing is one per square foot, 6 inches is four, 4 inches is nine, 3 inches is sixteen.
