It moves with the crop, the variety, the soil, the season, the spacing, how much you water and feed, and whether the plant gets a disease in August. Two gardens on the same street get different answers from the same packet. Seed catalogues sometimes quote a figure, your extension service may publish one for your area, and both are starting points rather than predictions. THE BEST SOURCE BY A LONG WAY IS YOUR OWN RECORD FROM LAST YEAR - weigh what one crop actually produced, once, and you have a number worth more than any published range. WORK BACK FROM WHAT YOU EAT, NOT FORWARD FROM WHAT YOU CAN FIT. - Why weigh a serving?
- Because it is easy to picture a portion and hard to judge one, and every figure downstream multiplies whatever you enter. A serving estimated at six ounces when it is really four inflates the whole plan by half. Weighing a normal portion once on a kitchen scale takes a minute and fixes the input permanently for that crop. It is the same reason the harvest-per-week output is worth glancing at - if that figure looks nothing like what your household actually gets through, the serving size is usually where the error is.
- Can I use it for several crops at once?
- Run it once per crop. Yields and eating rates are nothing alike between them - a household gets through a very different quantity of tomatoes than of parsnips, and a tomato plant and a parsnip yield nothing like the same weight. Trying to average across crops produces a number that describes none of them. The per-crop figures are also more useful in practice, because they tell you which crop is worth the space and which one you are growing out of habit.
- What if the answer is more plants than I can fit?
- That is a real and useful result rather than a failure of the calculation. The options are all legitimate: grow fewer crops and do them properly, accept eating less of that one from the garden, extend the window with succession sowings so fewer plants are in the ground at once, or choose a higher-yielding variety. What is not a good option is sowing the number that fits and hoping - that is how you end up with a glut in July and nothing in September, having done all the work anyway.
