Step length is estimated as a proportion of your height: about 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women, which is the widely used figure and works out to roughly 41 to 42 percent of height. A 5 foot 8 person comes to about a 28.2 inch step. Miles are then steps times step length, divided by 63,360 - the number of inches in a mile. ⚠️ STEP AND STRIDE ARE NOT THE SAME THING, and mixing them is a factor-of-two error. A STEP is one foot to the other. A STRIDE is a full cycle, left heel to the next left heel, so it is two steps. The 0.415 figure above is STEP length; the calculator shows both so you can see which one a given source means. Pedometers and phones count steps, not strides. The familiar 'about 2,000 steps in a mile' is a round number rather than a measurement, and it is optimistic for most people. Working backwards, 2,000 steps to the mile requires a step of 31.68 inches, which on this formula corresponds to someone about 6 foot 4. A 5 foot 8 walker is nearer 2,245 steps, and a 5 foot 4 walker nearer 2,400 - so a 10,000 step day is meaningfully shorter than the rule of thumb implies. Walking speed matters most day to day, because your step lengthens as you go faster: a brisk mile genuinely takes fewer steps than an amble.
How do I measure my real step length?
Walk a known distance at your normal pace, count your steps, and divide. A marked path, a running track or a measured stretch of pavement all work. Do it two or three times and average, and walk normally rather than carefully - a deliberate walking style is not the one you use for 10,000 steps a day. This beats any formula, and it takes five minutes.
Does this work for running?
No - it will understate the distance. Running step length is considerably longer than walking and changes with pace, so a formula calibrated on walking is the wrong tool. If you run, use GPS or a measured route; if you want a figure from step count, measure your running step separately at the pace you actually run.
Why do my phone and my watch disagree?
Because both are estimating. Step counting relies on detecting a rhythm in movement, and the two devices are in different places doing it differently - a wrist reads arm swing, a phone in a pocket reads hip movement, and a phone left on a desk reads nothing at all. Neither is measuring distance directly unless it is using GPS. Treat both as approximations of the same rough thing.
