How this is calculated
⚠️ GROSS AND NET ARE DIFFERENT NUMBERS AND THIS IS THE WHOLE POINT. Almost every tracker and calculator reports GROSS calories - everything your body used during the walk, including the energy it would have spent existing anyway. The NET figure is what the walk actually ADDED, and it is the only one that means anything if you are thinking about a deficit. You were always going to burn the resting portion; walking did not create it. HOW THE RESTING PART IS WORKED OUT: resting metabolism is conventionally 1 MET, defined as 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram per minute, which works out to about 1.05 kcal per kilogram per hour. So an hour of anything at all costs a 70 kg person roughly 73 kcal before the activity is counted. THE COST OF WALKING ITSELF IS ROUGHLY PROPORTIONAL TO WEIGHT AND DISTANCE, and - this surprises people - fairly insensitive to SPEED across normal walking paces. Getting there faster mostly means burning the same energy in less time rather than burning more of it. That is why the input here is a rate per kilogram per kilometre rather than a speed lookup, and why the default is adjustable: published figures vary, terrain and gait change it, and yours is not a universal constant. ⚠️ THE TWO STANDARD METHODS AGREE, WHICH IS WORTH KNOWING. Working the default case as net cost plus resting metabolism gives about 259 kcal gross. Working the same walk from the MET tables - roughly 3.5 METs at 5 km/h - gives about 257. Two independent routes landing within one percent is a decent sign the arithmetic is sound, and it is also a reminder that both are approximations rather than measurements. WHAT NEITHER METHOD SEES: hills, wind, surface, load carried, gait efficiency, temperature, and the fact that individuals differ from population averages by more than most people assume. Treat the result as an estimate accurate to within a comfortable margin, not to the calorie. ⚠️ AND THE PRACTICAL WARNING: the gap between gross and net is exactly the size of the error people make when eating back exercise calories. Eating back a tracker's gross figure reliably overshoots, and it is one of the most common reasons a deficit that looks correct on paper does not show up on the scales. If a walk is part of a weight plan, use the net number. WALKING IS EXCELLENT FOR REASONS THAT HAVE LITTLE TO DO WITH CALORIES - cardiovascular health, blood sugar, mood, sleep, joints and simply being outside. Judging it purely on energy expenditure undersells it considerably, and the calorie figure is the least interesting thing about a daily walk.

- Why is your number lower than my tracker's?
- Because your tracker is almost certainly reporting GROSS calories - everything your body used during the walk, including the energy it would have spent simply existing over the same period. The NET figure is what the walk actually added on top of that, and it is the only one that counts as a deficit. On the defaults the walk adds about 186 kcal while the tracker shows around 259, because 73 of those were always going to happen. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions, and most displays do not say which one they are showing.
- Where does the resting part come from?
- Resting metabolism is conventionally taken as 1 MET, defined as 3.5 millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute, which converts to roughly 1.05 kcal per kilogram per hour. So an hour of anything costs a 70 kg person about 73 kcal before you count the activity at all - sitting, standing, sleeping or walking. That figure is a population convention rather than a measurement of you, which is why it is an adjustable input here, but it is close enough to make the gross-versus-net point clearly.
- Does walking faster burn more calories?

Distance is the lever, not pace. Two standard methods agree closely on the default case: net cost plus resting metabolism gives about 259 kcal gross, and working the same walk from MET tables at roughly 3.5 METs gives about 257 - within one percent. That agreement is reassuring about the arithmetic, and it is also a reminder that both are approximations built on population averages. Neither sees hills, wind, surface, what you are carrying, your gait, the temperature, or how much you personally differ from the average.
- Should I eat back the calories I burned?
- If you do, use the NET figure - and the gap between gross and net is exactly the size of the error otherwise. Eating back a tracker's gross number reliably overshoots, because a portion of it was never a deficit in the first place, and that is one of the most common reasons a plan that looks correct on paper does not show up on the scales. Add the usual optimism about portion sizes on top and a modest deficit can vanish entirely. If a walk is part of a weight plan, the net number is the one to work from.
- Does my weight really matter that much?
- Yes - it is one of the two things that dominate the result. The cost of walking is roughly proportional to the mass you are moving, so a heavier person burns proportionally more over the same distance. The tool reports the net cost per kilometre for exactly this reason, since it is a stable and memorable figure to carry around. It also means the number falls as you lose weight, which is a small and slightly unfair feature of every energy calculation and worth knowing before you read a drop in the figure as a problem.
- Is walking worth it if the calorie figure is small?
- Almost certainly, and judging it on calories alone undersells it considerably. Walking has well-established benefits for cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, mood, sleep, joint health and simply being outside - none of which appear in this arithmetic. The energy figure is genuinely the least interesting thing about a daily walk. If you want the honest reality check on the calorie side, the distance-to-net-100-kcal output puts it in perspective against the size of an ordinary snack, and that comparison is worth seeing once rather than dwelling on.
