What the fourth tier actually buys

Two things:

  • Range from 40 to 50 blocks
  • The secondary power slot — a second effect, or upgrading the first to level II

If you specifically want Haste II or a second effect, there's no alternative and 81 blocks is the price.

If you just want a large radius, three tiers gets you 40 blocks of range for 83 blocks of build — much better value per block than paying another 81 for the last 10.

Iron is the answer

Valid materials: iron, gold, diamond, emerald or netherite. They can be mixed freely, there's no requirement to use one, and there's no bonus for using an expensive one.

A full iron pyramid works exactly as well as a full diamond one.

164 blocks = 1,476 ingots. That sounds enormous and is very achievable with an iron farm. In diamonds, the same pyramid is 1,476 diamonds — a completely different proposition.

Anyone building in diamond is doing it entirely for the look, which is fine, but worth knowing it's a cosmetic choice.

Why the numbers climb so fast

Worth seeing as a shape rather than a list, because it explains every decision on this page.

Each tier is a square two blocks wider than the one above, so the layers go 9, 25, 49, 81 — the odd squares. The gaps between them grow as well: +16, +24, +32.

That's why the running total looks so lopsided. Three tiers is 83 blocks. Four is 164 — you double the entire build to add the last layer.

It also means there's no cheap partial upgrade. You can't add half a tier; the layer is either complete or the beacon doesn't count it, so the 81 blocks is all-or-nothing.

Planning the trip

The calculator gives stacks because that's how you'll actually carry it: 164 blocks is 2.56 stacks, which is nothing. The 1,476 ingots that make them are 23 stacks, which is a very different journey.

Craft the blocks before travelling, not after. Nine ingots to a block means you're carrying a ninth of the volume — and it's the single easiest logistical win on the whole project.

The nether star is the real gate

The beacon block itself costs 3 obsidian, 5 glass and 1 nether star.

The obsidian and glass are trivial. The nether star means summoning and killing the Wither — a considerably larger undertaking than mining 164 blocks.

If you're planning several beacons, plan around the star count, not the block count. That's why the calculator shows it separately.

If it's built correctly and does nothing, check the sky

By far the most common reason a correct pyramid produces no effect.

Every block directly above the beacon must be transparent or air, all the way up to the build limit.

Glass and stained glass are fine — which catches people the other way too: a decorative glass roof is fine, a stone one is not.

Check that before dismantling anything. The pyramid is almost never the problem.

Don't build a fifth tier

You can. It does nothing.

Four is the maximum that has any effect, and anything above it is decoration. If you want to cover a larger area, the answer is more beacons — each with its own nether star — rather than a taller pyramid.

Print the build sheet — layer costs, what each tier unlocks, and the sky check at the bottom.
