A beacon pyramid is square layers, each two blocks wider than the one above: Tier 1 - 3x3 - 9 blocks Tier 2 - 5x5 - 25 blocks Tier 3 - 7x7 - 49 blocks Tier 4 - 9x9 - 81 blocks So a full four-tier pyramid is 9 + 25 + 49 + 81 = 164 blocks, plus the beacon itself sitting on top. ⚠️ THE COST IS NOT LINEAR, AND THAT IS THE WHOLE DECISION. Each layer is a square, so the blocks needed grow with the square of the width. The fourth tier alone is 81 blocks - 49 percent of the entire pyramid, for one additional tier. Put another way: the first THREE tiers come to 83 blocks between them, and the fourth costs 81 on its own. Adding it very nearly doubles the build. WHAT EACH TIER BUYS: the effect range grows by 10 blocks per tier, from 20 at one tier to 50 at four. The tiers also unlock stronger options - and critically, the SECONDARY power, which lets you run a second effect or upgrade the first to level II, requires the full four tiers. That is what people are usually buying the fourth tier for, and it is worth knowing that is the specific thing 81 blocks purchases. THE PYRAMID MUST BE SOLID and made of a valid mineral block - iron, gold, diamond, emerald or netherite. They can be mixed freely, so there is no requirement to build it all from one material, and a pyramid of cheap iron works exactly as well as diamond. Anyone building a diamond beacon is doing it for the look. IRON IS THE PRACTICAL ANSWER: 164 iron blocks is 1,476 iron ingots, which sounds enormous and is very achievable with an iron farm. In diamonds the same pyramid is 1,476 diamonds, which is a different proposition entirely. THE BEACON ITSELF costs 3 obsidian, 5 glass and 1 NETHER STAR - and the nether star means killing the Wither, which is the real gate on the whole project rather than the blocks. ⚠️ IT NEEDS A CLEAR VIEW OF THE SKY. Every block directly above the beacon must be transparent or air, all the way up. Glass and stained glass are fine; a roof is not. This is the commonest reason a correctly built beacon does nothing, and it is worth checking before dismantling anything.

164, plus the beacon itself. The layers are squares two blocks wider each time: 3x3 is 9, 5x5 is 25, 7x7 is 49 and 9x9 is 81, and 9 + 25 + 49 + 81 is 164. Because each layer is a square, the cost grows with the square of the width - which is why the numbers get steep so quickly and why the last tier dominates the total.
Is the fourth tier worth it?
It costs 81 blocks - 49 percent of the entire pyramid, near enough to double the three-tier build - so it is a real decision rather than a formality. What it buys is the SECONDARY power slot, which lets you run a second effect or upgrade the first to level II, plus the range going from 40 to 50 blocks. If you specifically want Haste II or a second effect then there is no alternative; if you just want a large effect radius, three tiers gets you 83 blocks of build for 40 blocks of range, which is much better value per block.
What can I build it from?
Iron, gold, diamond, emerald or netherite blocks, and they can be mixed freely - there is no requirement to use one material, and no bonus for using an expensive one. A full iron pyramid works exactly as well as a full diamond one. Iron is the practical answer at 1,476 ingots for a full pyramid, which sounds enormous and is very achievable with an iron farm. Anyone building in diamond is doing it entirely for the look.
My beacon is built correctly and does nothing.
Check the sky. Every block directly above the beacon must be transparent or air, all the way up to the build limit - and this is by far the commonest reason a correct pyramid produces no effect. Glass and stained glass are fine, which catches people out in the other direction: a decorative glass roof is fine, a stone one is not. Check that before dismantling anything, because the pyramid is almost never the problem.
What does the beacon block itself cost?
Three obsidian, five glass and one nether star. The nether star is the real project: it drops from the Wither, which you have to summon and kill, and that is a considerably larger undertaking than mining the blocks. If you are planning several beacons, the star count is the number to plan around rather than the block count - which is why the calculator shows it separately.
Can I make a pyramid bigger than four tiers?
You can build one, but it does nothing extra - four is the maximum that has any effect, and blocks beyond that are decoration. It is worth knowing before someone builds a fifth layer expecting more range. If you want coverage over a larger area, the answer is more beacons rather than a taller pyramid, and each one needs its own nether star.
