Minecraft Fuel Calculator

How much fuel a smelt actually needs - and the reason nine coal in a crafting grid smelts eight more items than nine coal in a furnace.

Pick your fuel and say how many items you are smelting. The interesting output is the leftover - fuel keeps burning after the last item is done, and that waste is where most fuel actually goes.

Your details

A stack is 64.

Coal and charcoal are identical as fuel. The default is a coal block, so the leftover is visible on arrival.

Affects TIME only. Fuel consumption is identical.

About this tool

Minecraft Fuel Burn Times (And the Free 11% Nobody Uses)

Nine coal in a furnace smelt 72 items. The same nine crafted into a block smelt 80 — eight free smelts from one crafting grid, and it's reversible.

How this is calculated

Every smelting operation takes 200 game ticks, which is 10 seconds. So a fuel's burn time divided by 200 is exactly how many items it can smelt, and that is the only number you need. THE BURN TIMES, in ticks and in items: Lava bucket 20,000 ticks - 100 items. Block of coal 16,000 - 80 items. Dried kelp block 4,000 - 20 items. Blaze rod 2,400 - 12 items. Coal or charcoal 1,600 - 8 items. Wooden planks 300 - 1.5 items. Stick 100 - 0.5 items. Bamboo 50 - 0.25 items. Charcoal and coal are IDENTICAL as fuel. Charcoal is renewable and coal is not, which is the only thing separating them. ⚠️ CRAFTING NINE COAL INTO A BLOCK GIVES YOU EIGHT EXTRA SMELTS. Nine coal burned individually smelt 72 items. The same nine crafted into one block of coal smelt 80. That is 11.1 percent more from an operation that costs nothing and is fully reversible - a block crafts back into nine coal. It is the single best fuel decision in the game and it takes one crafting grid. FUEL DOES NOT STOP WHEN THE ITEMS RUN OUT. A furnace consumes a whole unit of fuel and keeps burning it, so smelting one item on a lava bucket wastes 99 items' worth of fuel. The leftover output here is that waste made visible, and it is why matching the fuel to the job matters more than picking the strongest fuel. The fractional fuels are the ones to watch. Planks smelt 1.5 items, so two planks smelt three items exactly - but one plank smelting one item throws away half a plank. Sticks are 0.5 and bamboo is 0.25, which makes them excellent for large automated jobs and wasteful for small manual ones. A lava bucket returns the empty bucket. The three iron that made it are not consumed, which is what makes lava the cheapest fuel in the game by a wide margin once you have a bucket. This assumes a normal furnace. A blast furnace and a smoker are TWICE as fast, which halves the time but does NOT change the fuel - each still burns the same fuel for the same number of items.

Common questions

Why does crafting coal into blocks give more smelts?
Because a block of coal burns for 16,000 ticks and nine individual coal burn for 14,400 between them. At 200 ticks per item that is 80 items versus 72 - eight extra smelts for free. It is 11.1 percent more fuel from an operation that costs nothing, takes one crafting grid, and is completely reversible since a block crafts straight back into nine coal. If you take one thing from this page, take that.
What is the leftover figure telling me?
How much fuel burns with nothing in the furnace. A furnace consumes a whole unit and keeps it burning until the time is up, whether or not there is anything left to smelt - so smelting a single item on a lava bucket wastes 99 items' worth of fuel. That is why matching the fuel to the size of the job matters more than picking the strongest fuel available, and it is the number most fuel calculators do not show you.
Is charcoal worse than coal?
No - they are identical as fuel, both 1,600 ticks and 8 items. The only difference is that charcoal is renewable and coal is not. You make charcoal by smelting logs, which does cost fuel, so a common early setup is smelting logs into charcoal and using some of that charcoal to smelt the next batch. Since they are interchangeable in the furnace, the choice is entirely about which you can get more of.
Why is lava the cheapest fuel?
Because it smelts 100 items and returns your bucket. The three iron ingots that made the bucket are not consumed, so the ongoing cost of a lava bucket is a trip to a lava source. Nothing else in the game comes close on a per-item basis. The one catch is the leftover: a lava bucket in a furnace with 20 items in it throws away 80 items' worth of the best fuel in the game, so save them for full jobs.
How do fractional fuels work?
A plank burns for 300 ticks, which is 1.5 items at 200 ticks each. It genuinely does smelt one item and half of the next, so two planks smelt exactly three items and nothing is lost. The waste appears when the job does not line up: one plank smelting one item throws away half a plank. Sticks at 0.5 and bamboo at 0.25 behave the same way, which makes them excellent for large automated feeds and poor for small manual smelts.
Does a blast furnace use less fuel?
No - it is twice as fast and burns the same amount. A blast furnace or smoker takes 5 seconds per item instead of 10, so a fuel that smelts 8 items in a furnace still smelts 8 in a blast furnace, just in half the time. The speed input on this calculator changes the time output only, and that is not a simplification - it is how the game works.

Take it further with AI

Copy this into ChatGPT or Claude with your own numbers filled in. It hands over the figures this calculator worked out, so the answer is built on real arithmetic instead of a guess.

I used the Minecraft Fuel Calculator at https://www.bfcbrilliance.com/tools/minecraft-fuel-calculator.

What I entered:
- Items to smelt (items): ___
- Fuel: ___
- Furnace type: ___

What it calculated:
- Fuel units needed: ___
- Wasted capacity: ___
- — as a share of the fuel: ___
- Time to smelt: ___
- — in minutes: ___

Use those figures as given — they are already worked out, so please don't recalculate or estimate your own. Help me turn them into a plan: what to buy or do, in what order, roughly what it should cost, and the mistakes people most often make with this job.
