Minecraft Fuel Burn Times (And the Free 11% Nobody Uses)
Nine coal in a furnace smelt 72 items. The same nine crafted into a block smelt 80 — eight free smelts from one crafting grid, and it's reversible.

A block burns 16,000 ticks. Nine loose coal burn 14,400 between them. That gap is free fuel that almost nobody collects.

The only number you need
One smelt = 200 ticks = 10 seconds.
So any fuel's burn time ÷ 200 is exactly how many items it smelts. That's the whole system.

Coal and charcoal are identical. Same 1,600 ticks, same 8 items. The only difference is that charcoal is renewable and coal isn't.
Fuel doesn't stop when the items run out
This is the part most fuel guides skip, and it's where your fuel actually goes.
A furnace consumes a whole unit and burns it to the end, whether or not there's anything left to smelt.

So the strongest fuel is often the wrong one. Matching the fuel to the size of the job matters more than picking the best fuel you own — which is why the calculator shows the leftover rather than just the fuel count.
Fractional fuels are exact, not lossy
A plank is 300 ticks — genuinely 1.5 items. It smelts one item and half of the next.
Two planks smelt exactly three items, and nothing is lost.
The waste only appears when the job doesn't line up: one plank smelting one item throws away half a plank. Sticks (0.5) and bamboo (0.25) behave identically, which makes them excellent for large automated feeds and poor for small manual smelts.
Lava is the cheapest fuel in the game
100 items — and you get the bucket back.
The three iron that made it aren't consumed, so the ongoing cost of a lava bucket is a walk to a lava source. Nothing else comes close per item.
The catch is the one above: a lava bucket on a 20-item job discards 80 items' worth of the best fuel available. Save them for full jobs.
Worth knowing: lava buckets don't stack. A stack of coal blocks is 64 × 80 = 5,120 smelts in one slot; lava buckets need a slot each.
A blast furnace doesn't save fuel
It's twice as fast and burns exactly the same amount.
5 seconds per item instead of 10. A coal still smelts 8 items — it just finishes in 40 seconds instead of 80.
That's not a simplification in the calculator. The furnace-type input changes the time output — shown in seconds and in minutes, because a full stack is longer than people expect — and deliberately leaves the fuel figure alone, because that's how the game works.
A stack of 64 is 10.7 minutes in a furnace and 5.3 in a blast furnace. Worth knowing before you stand there watching it.
Use a blast furnace for ores and a smoker for food when you want it done sooner. Neither one stretches your coal.
The practical version
- Craft coal into blocks before burning it. Always. It's free.
- Fill the furnace before walking away — leftover fuel is the main loss.
- Save lava for hundred-item jobs.
- Feed sticks and bamboo to automated smelters, not manual ones.
- Charcoal where coal is scarce — they're the same fuel.
