How this is calculated

MEASURE, DO NOT ESTIMATE. Run the farm for a known number of minutes, count what came out, and enter both. Everything here follows from those two numbers, and a measured rate beats a design-spec rate every time because it already includes your chunk loading, your mob caps, your hopper throughput and whatever is quietly going wrong. ⚠️ A SHORT MEASUREMENT IS AN UNRELIABLE ONE, AND THE TOOL SAYS BY HOW MUCH. If items arrive independently, the rough margin of error on a count is 100 divided by the square root of that count - so 100 items gives you about ±10%, 400 items about ±5%, and 10,000 items about ±1%. This is why two people with identical farms report different rates and each believes the other has built it wrong. The fix is always to measure longer, never to argue. THE MINUTES-TO-A-TIGHT-RATE OUTPUT TELLS YOU HOW MUCH LONGER. It works out how long you would need to run at your observed pace to collect the 400 items that give a ±5% figure. If it says less than you have already measured, you are done. STORAGE IS SLOTS TIMES STACK SIZE. A single chest, a barrel, an ender chest and a shulker box all hold 27 slots; a double chest holds 54. At the usual stack of 64 that makes a double chest 3,456 items - the number worth memorising, because it is the unit most people actually think in. ⚠️ STACK SIZE CHANGES EVERYTHING AND IS EASY TO FORGET. Most items stack to 64, but a good number stack to 16 and some not at all. A double chest holds 3,456 of a 64-stacking item and only 864 of a 16-stacking one - a farm that fills storage in an hour for one item fills it in a quarter of that for the other, with no change in the farm at all. THE FILL TIMES ASSUME THE FARM KEEPS RUNNING AT THE MEASURED RATE, which is the part most likely to be wrong over long periods. Mob caps fill, crops need replanting, chunks unload when you wander off, and a farm that is fed by a spawner behaves differently at night. Common questions

How long should I run the farm before trusting the number?
Long enough to collect a few hundred items. The rough margin of error on a count is 100 divided by its square root, so 100 items gives about ±10%, 400 items about ±5% and 10,000 about ±1%. That is why the tool reports both the error on what you measured and the minutes you would need at your observed pace to reach a ±5% figure. A two-minute test on a slow farm tells you almost nothing, and it is the reason two players with identical builds report different rates and each concludes the other has made a mistake.
Why measure instead of using the design rate?
Because a measured rate already includes everything that is actually happening to your build. Chunk loading, mob caps, hopper throughput, a water stream that misses one block, a slab someone placed in the wrong spot - all of it is in the number that comes out of the chest, and none of it is in the figure from the tutorial. How many items does a double chest hold?
Fifty-four slots, which is 3,456 items at the usual stack of 64. A single chest, a barrel, an ender chest and a shulker box are all 27 slots, so 1,728 items at the same stack size. The 3,456 figure is the one worth memorising because it is the unit most people actually plan in - farms get described as taking so many hours per double chest far more often than in items per hour, and it makes two farms easy to compare without a calculator.
Does stack size really matter that much?
Enormously, and it is the easiest thing to forget. A double chest holds 3,456 of a 64-stacking item but only 864 of something that stacks to 16, and just 54 of something that does not stack at all. So an egg farm fills a double chest four times faster than its items-per-hour figure would suggest next to a cobblestone farm, with no difference in the farm itself. Setting this correctly is what makes the fill times mean anything, and it is why the option is a dropdown rather than an assumption.
Why does the fill time look too good over long periods?
Because it assumes the farm carries on at exactly the rate you measured, and over hours that is the assumption most likely to break. Mob caps fill up, crops need replanting, chunks unload the moment you wander far enough away, and spawner-fed farms behave differently at night than during the day. A ten-minute measurement extrapolated to eight hours is an order of magnitude rather than a schedule. If you need a long projection to be accurate, the answer is a long measurement, not a longer extrapolation of a short one.
What counts as the items collected?
Whatever actually reaches your storage, which is not always what the farm produces. Items that despawn before a hopper picks them up, drops that fall outside the collection area, and anything a mob picks up are all produced and not collected - and the number you care about for planning is the one that arrives. Start the clock on an empty chest, run the farm, and count what is in there at the end. That way the losses are included automatically rather than needing to be estimated, which is the same reason the tool asks for a measurement rather than a design figure.
Can I compare two farms with this?
Yes, and it is the most reliable thing it does, provided you measure both the same way. Absolute rates carry all the uncertainty of your particular world and session, but the comparison between two farms measured back to back in the same conditions cancels most of that out. Use the same measurement length for both, check that the margin of error is small enough that the difference between them is real rather than noise, and be suspicious of any gap smaller than the two margins added together.
