Reading takes longer than you think

The Reading Time Calculator tells you how long a book will really take, and it is built on a 190-study meta-analysis whose real figure is lower than the number everyone quotes.

Commonly-cited reading speeds are optimistic, and they get more optimistic the more the material demands. A page of a novel and a page of a dense textbook are not the same page, and planning a reading list at a quoted-average rate produces a schedule that quietly runs over from week one.

This matters most for the courses with the heaviest reading, which are exactly the ones where being behind compounds.

When the deadline is a fixed number of pages

Set reading is the one workload you can convert into a daily figure exactly, because both ends are known: the pages, and the date.

The Reading Pages Per Day Calculator does that division, and it is worth doing at the start of a term rather than the week before. A 400-page text over eleven weeks is a manageable daily number; the same text over the last four days is not, and those are the same book.

What it deliberately will not do is name the optimal interval. Published spacing schedules disagree with each other substantially, most of the research is on vocabulary and paired-associate recall rather than on understanding a syllabus, and the intervals quoted in popular articles are stated with far more precision than the evidence supports. Flashcards: the reviews are what break it

New cards a day is deck size divided by days available. Almost everyone gets this right, and then the schedule collapses anyway — because a card you learn today does not go away. It comes back, repeatedly, and every new card increases the daily review load for weeks afterwards. The real daily cost of "20 new cards" is never 20 cards; it is 20 new ones plus whatever the previous days send back.

The tool takes the review multiple as an input, deliberately, because how many reviews a new card generates depends on your scheduling algorithm and your own recall — it is not a constant somebody can publish.
