NEW CARDS A DAY IS THE EASY HALF: deck size divided by days available. Almost everyone gets this right and then finds the schedule collapses anyway. ⚠️ THE PART THAT BREAKS IS REVIEWS. A card you learn today does not go away — it comes back, repeatedly, and every new card you add increases the daily review load for weeks afterwards. So the daily cost of '20 new cards' is never 20 cards; it is 20 new cards plus whatever the previous days' cards send back. THE REVIEW MULTIPLE IS AN INPUT, DELIBERATELY. How many reviews a new card generates per day at steady state depends on the scheduling algorithm, your accuracy, and how aggressively the deck is tuned — and published figures for it vary widely. Rather than assert one, this asks you for it. A commonly cited working range for a well-behaved deck is somewhere around 5 to 10 reviews per new card per day at steady state; if your app reports your own ratio, use that instead of any general figure. ⚠️ THE HONEST WARNING: the total daily load rises for weeks after you start, then plateaus. A schedule that feels comfortable in week one is not the schedule you are signing up for. Look at the STEADY-STATE figure, not the first few days. ACCURACY DRIVES EVERYTHING. Cards you fail come back sooner and more often, so a deck you are getting wrong generates far more reviews than one you are getting right. - Why is the daily load so much bigger than the new cards?
- Because a card you learn today does not go away. It comes back, repeatedly, and every new card you add raises the review load for weeks afterwards. So the daily cost of twenty new cards is never twenty cards — it is twenty new ones plus everything the previous days send back. That stacking is the single most common reason a flashcard schedule that felt fine in week one collapses in week three.
- Where does the review multiple come from?
- You, deliberately. How many reviews a new card generates per day at steady state depends on the scheduling algorithm, your accuracy and how the deck is tuned, and published figures vary widely enough that asserting one would be misleading. A commonly cited working range for a well-behaved deck is roughly 5 to 10 reviews per new card per day at steady state, but if your app reports your own ratio, that number is far better than any general one. It is an input because it is genuinely yours.
- Why does it feel manageable at first?
- Because the review load builds up over weeks and then plateaus. The steady-state figure is the one to check against your available time, and checking it on day two rather than day twenty is the whole point of running the numbers.
- My load is unmanageable. Fewer cards?
- Possibly, but look at card QUALITY first. Cards you get wrong come back sooner and more often, so a deck you are failing generates far more reviews than one you are getting right — which means accuracy, not quantity, is often the real driver. The usual culprits are cards that are too long, cards that test two things at once, and cards made from material you never actually understood. Fixing those reduces the load more than cutting the deck does, and it is the version that still teaches you something.
- How do I get the seconds-per-card figure?
- Time yourself over a real session rather than estimating. It varies enormously — simple vocabulary recognition can run a few seconds, while a card requiring a derivation or a multi-part answer can take half a minute or more. Since this is what converts a card count into a time commitment, and time is the constraint that actually decides whether the plan happens, it is worth the one session it takes to measure properly.
