How this is calculated
Total words is pages multiplied by words per page. That number is then divided by your reading speed to get minutes, and divided again by the length of one sitting to get the number of sittings. THE DEFAULT SPEED IS 238 WORDS PER MINUTE, from Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies covering 18,573 participants - the largest synthesis of silent reading rates available. It found 238 wpm for silent reading of non-fiction, 260 wpm for fiction, and 183 wpm for reading aloud. ⚠️ That is LOWER than the figure most reading calculators use. Numbers between 250 and 300 wpm circulate widely and are often presented as established, but the meta-analysis puts the typical adult below that for non-fiction. If a calculator has ever told you a book would take six hours and it took nine, an inflated speed constant is a likely reason. The same meta-analysis puts the realistic RANGES at 175 to 300 wpm for non-fiction and 200 to 320 for fiction. Those are facts about readers, not outputs of this calculator - the tool takes one speed and does arithmetic with it. That spread is genuinely wide, which is why speed is an input. If you want your own figure rather than the average, time yourself on a few pages of the actual book - it is a two-minute job and it is far more accurate than any default. Words per page varies more than people expect. Around 275 is a common figure for a standard trade paperback, but a dense academic hardback can carry 400 or more and a large-print or heavily illustrated book far fewer.
