How Nether Portal Coordinates Work
Divide X and Z by 8 going in, multiply by 8 coming out, and never touch Y. The maths, and why portals still link to the wrong place.
Eight to one, horizontally
The Nether is compressed. One block walked there covers eight in the Overworld — which is the entire reason anyone builds a Nether hub. A 4,000-block journey becomes 500.
That ratio is all the maths there is:
- Overworld → Nether: divide X and Z by 8
- Nether → Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8

Y is never divided
The one people forget.
Height is the same in both dimensions. An Overworld portal at Y 64 and its Nether counterpart at Y 64 are at the same height, and there's no conversion to do.
It matters because Nether hubs are usually built at a convenient Y — well above the lava, often up near the roof at Y 128 — while the Overworld ends sit at whatever height the ground happens to be. Those are just different heights, not a conversion you got wrong.
A worked example
You've got a base in the Overworld at X 1000, Z 250, Y 64.
Divide the horizontals by 8:
- 1000 ÷ 8 = 125
- 250 ÷ 8 = 31.25, so 31
Y stays 64.
So you build the Nether side at X 125, Z 31. Round to the nearest block — linking has tolerance and a block either way won't change which portal you arrive at.
Going the other way, a Nether portal at X 125, Z 31 comes out around X 1000, Z 248 in the Overworld. Close enough; the rounding costs you a couple of blocks.
Why your portal still linked somewhere wrong
Getting the coordinates right and still arriving in the wrong place is the classic Nether hub frustration, and it isn't a maths problem.
A portal searches for an existing portal near the destination before creating a new one. So if there's already a portal in that area — one you built earlier, one from a different destination, or one the game generated for you — it captures the link. Two destinations end up sharing one exit.
The fix is simple and non-obvious: build both ends by hand. Don't step through a portal and let the game generate the far side wherever it likes. Work out the coordinates, go to that spot in the other dimension, and build the portal yourself.
If a hub is already tangled, the usual cause is portals sitting too close together in the Nether. Spreading them out, or breaking and rebuilding the offending one, sorts it.
Planning a hub
The pattern that works:
- List every Overworld destination with its coordinates
- Convert them all first, before building anything
- Pick one Y level for the whole hub and stick to it
- Build both ends by hand at the matching coordinates
- Light the tunnels so nothing spawns in them
- Sign both ends — you will not remember which tunnel is which
- Walk each link before you rely on it
Doing all the conversions up front takes ten minutes and saves finding out at destination six that two of them share an exit.
Where people go wrong
- Dividing Y. It isn't compressed. Leave it alone.
- Multiplying when they meant to divide. Overworld numbers are the big ones — if your answer got bigger going into the Nether, you've done it backwards.
- Letting the game generate the far side. The single biggest cause of a broken hub.
- Building portals too close together in the Nether. They capture each other's links. Remember 100 Nether blocks is 800 Overworld blocks — things that feel far apart above ground are neighbours below.
- Assuming it applies to the End. It doesn't. There's no coordinate compression there.
- Forgetting the ratio cuts both ways. A small mistake in Nether coordinates is eight times the mistake in the Overworld.
The short version
Divide X and Z by 8 going into the Nether, multiply by 8 coming out, leave Y alone. Round to the nearest block. Convert every destination before you build, and build both ends by hand — the maths is easy, and the thing that actually breaks hubs is letting the game place the far portal for you.
