What Is eDPI, and How to Calculate It
400 DPI at 2.0 and 1600 DPI at 0.5 are the same aim. Someone telling you they play on 0.5 has told you nothing.
Neither number means anything on its own

All three are the same aim. Identical crosshair movement for identical hand movement.
Which is why "I play on 0.5" tells you nothing without a DPI, and "I play on 1600 DPI" tells you nothing without a sensitivity.
eDPI = DPI × in-game sensitivity. That's the entire formula, and it's the only figure that survives being quoted to someone with different hardware. It's why every pro settings list uses it.

Changing DPI without ruining your aim
The practical use, and it comes up more than people expect — a new mouse, a different mousepad, a different machine.
Multiply your DPI by some factor, divide your in-game sensitivity by the same factor. Your eDPI is untouched, and so is your muscle memory.
800 → 1600 DPI? Halve your sensitivity. 1.0 becomes 0.5.
The calculator does this for whatever new DPI you enter, along with the reverse question: what sensitivity would put you on someone else's eDPI without touching your mouse settings.
eDPI only compares within one game
This is the most common misuse of it.
Games scale sensitivity differently, so 800 eDPI in one title is not the same physical aim as 800 in another. Converting properly requires each game's own sensitivity scaling factor — a different calculation entirely, and not what this does.
Compare a CS eDPI against another CS eDPI. Treat a number quoted from a different game as meaningless until it's been converted.
Does DPI itself matter, at matched eDPI?
A little, at the extremes.
Very low DPI can produce visibly stepped movement — the sensor reports fewer positions per inch, so the game has less information to work with.
Very high DPI can pick up more sensor noise, and on some hardware the top settings are reached by interpolation rather than genuine sensor resolution.
In the middle — roughly 800 to 1600 — the difference isn't something most people can detect. Which is exactly why that's where most players end up.
Two Windows settings that invalidate everyone's numbers

Anything else applies a multiplier outside the game, and some settings drop or duplicate mouse counts rather than scaling cleanly.
"Enhance pointer precision": OFF.
That's mouse acceleration. It makes the same hand movement produce a different result depending how fast you move — which is the precise opposite of what muscle memory needs.
Neither this calculator nor anyone's published eDPI accounts for either setting. They have to be neutral for the number to mean anything at all.
Comparing yourself to someone else
The calculator's comparison outputs answer the two questions people actually have when they read a pro's settings page.
"How different is my aim from theirs?" — the ratio, and the percentage. At 800 eDPI against a compared 1,000, yours is 0.80×, or 20% slower. That's a meaningful gap; a 5% one is not, and seeing it as a number stops you from chasing differences too small to feel.
"What would I set to play like that?" — the sensitivity that puts you on their eDPI at your own DPI. You don't have to match their mouse settings, only their product. This is the output to use, because copying someone's raw sensitivity value without matching their DPI is the single most common way people end up on an aim they didn't intend.
What a change of DPI actually costs you
Nothing, if you do the arithmetic — and that's worth saying, because a lot of players avoid touching DPI purely out of fear of losing their aim.
You can move from 800 to 3200 DPI and keep your aim exactly identical by dividing your in-game sensitivity by four. Not approximately identical. Identical, to the count.
That matters when there's a real reason to change: a mouse whose sensor performs better at a particular DPI, a game with a sensitivity slider too coarse at your current setting, or a second machine you can't configure the same way.
What eDPI should you use?
There isn't a correct answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is describing their own preference.
Lower suits deliberate, arm-driven aim and games with long-range engagements. Higher suits fast target switching and games where you need to turn quickly.
But what matters considerably more than the number is that it stops changing. Aim is muscle memory, and muscle memory is built by repetition.
Copying a pro's eDPI is a fine place to start. It's a poor place to keep re-starting from.
Print the settings card — mostly so that a driver reset, a new mouse or a reinstall can't quietly cost you the thing you've been building for months.
